Non-Surgical Gum Treatment

With an estimated 80 percent of adults showing some level of gum disease, it is the among the leading causes of tooth loss. The good news is that there are a number of treatments available to manage these conditions, including nonsurgical options.

The gums, ligaments, and bone around the teeth form the foundation for one's teeth, which is also referred to as the periodontal attachment. When the periodontal attachment is not healthy, it jeopardizes the teeth just as a bad foundation would threaten the stability of a house. Signs of unhealthy periodontal attachment (gum disease) include: gums that are red and bleed easily, persistent bad breath, gums that are pulled away from the tooth, loose teeth and changes in the position or bite of the teeth. The presence of any of these signs may mean something is wrong. With the proper care, however, it may be possible for the gums to return to a healthy state.

If you're experiencing one of these symptoms, the sooner you come in and see us, the more likely it can be treated without surgery. The treatment usually involves a deep cleaning or root planing, along with local antibiotic agents. If the gum disease has advanced beyond the scope of non-surgical gum treatments, it may need to be treated through surgery or extraction. Remember, the best way to prevent gum disease and any problems with the periodontal attachment is through preventive dental hygiene, including brushing your teeth and gums, flossing and regular dental check-ups during which we’ll remove accumulated plaque that can  contribute to gum disease.
