Dentures are removable devices that can replace one or more teeth. Dentures serve many purposes: they aid chewing ability, help with speech by improving phonetics, and they restore the face’s natural appearance.
There are two types of dentures: partial and complete. A partial denture is made to replace a select few teeth while a full denture replaces all teeth on the upper arch (maxillary), lower arch (mandibular) or both. Although we try hard to help you save as many teeth as possible through procedures such as fillings and crowns, sometimes teeth must be removed.
When considering which dentures are right for you, we’ll examine your entire mouth and make a determination as to which teeth can be saved and which cannot.. The appropriate teeth are then removed with anesthesia. Dentures are fitted to go over or around the teeth remaining in your mouth. Most of the time, dentures are placed the same day the teeth are removed, so you avoid having to go any period of time without teeth. There is an adjustment period after dentures are placed in the mouth and it can take some getting used to. You may salivate excessively or experience mild localized discomfort during this period. Once you’re accustomed to the dentures, most of the normal functionality and appearance return. Dental implants can often be used to further stabilize and retain dentures.
